Back at WalMart again.

I got burned going to WalMart on a Saturday when the students are in town. The cashier who rung up my order mis-typed the serial number for the cheapo phone I bought (the girls are at the point where they are going to and from so many places, we needed a second kid phone). This meant 40 minutes... FORTY MINUTES... in the electronics section trying to get it straightened out today.

I love being subtly accused of attempting to steal a TEN DOLLAR phone. Because I often go back to the store to complain about (exchange, try to fix, whatever) a device I "stole" on a trip where I spent $150 on other items!!!! Grrrr....

Sitting down to chocolate almond pancakes, bacon, a pear, and a cup of hot tea thanks to Kyle and Terzo.

Took turns last night with Kyle "dealing" with the stupid stomach bug. So, far the kids are fine, but it explains why I felt so blah yesterday. Now I'm just tired. Slept in WAY past when I had wanted to get up, but hopefully my body has finally kicked this thing. It is no fun and no longer welcome.

Wednesdays are library and Bible study days. Just finished renewing library books online and collecting what has to go back. I was hoping to have had this done much earlier than this, but I didn't. I've made sleeping in 30 minutes or so the next couple of days a priority to get myself back-on-track health-wise, but that means I am throwing myself off a bit in everything else for a bit. Since we are in a new schedule anyway and that schedule is currently a little flexible since the university semester hasn't started and outside activities haven't completely ramped up yet, so it seemed easier to add one more level to the gradual shift now rather than a huge set-back later by way of a sick day or five.

Back to the daily grind.

This semester, Kyle and I are trying a new schedule and today is day 1. I don't have everything quite in place yet, but I am using this week mostly to see what I do need so that he can oversee/ implement school three days a week. We are switching to a 6-day school schedule where he does 3 days and I do the other three. The school person will also be in charge of all household, chauffeur, and parenting duties these days. This should free-up the other person to work on our business start-up full time at least three days a week.

That's the plan for now. I'm sure it will be tweaked many many times, but I like the direction we are heading.

Now the cooking has begun.

Well, it's not really cooking technically speaking. Quarto is helping me make stuffed dates. Slit open a pitted date, insert half a walnut half (also known as a quarter of a walnut), press the date closed around the nut, roll in sugar, repeat. Try not to eat them as soon as you're done making them... it's hard, but it can be done.

Volunteering at the local animal shelter.

One hour of tucking donation envelopes into the seasonal newsletter flew by! I hated that we had to be the ones to break it to the shelter that one whole case of their newsletters was stapled incorrectly so the envelopes couldn't be placed in them. I don't want to be at the publisher end of that phone call.

When we arrived at 11, a jeep pulled in in front of us. The shelter doesn't officially open until noon, so the couple was just hanging out and waiting, but when we walked past their car, the gentleman inside asked if we wanted a free puppy. He then got out and opened the trunk and there were two travel cages containing 6 puppies! They were so cute, and I was really temped. I even sent a text to Kyle asking if he wanted one, but a shelter worker came out to see what we needed and brought the puppies inside before he could respond. Probably a good thing since we had just dropped our newest family member (a stray shih tzu) at the vet for a check up and a bath. The last thing I need right now is a puppy to take care of.

Thankful for southern hospitality.

It's rather cold and rainy here today, so we decided to do a few limited things indoors. One of these was to view the gingerbread houses on display at the university's theater. A friend who works there told us that the display was open whenever the university was open, so we figured this cold, rainy morning of final exams week would be a good time to go. When we got to the door, a man in a suit opened it and asked if we were there for the press conference. Huh? When I informed him that we were there to see the gingerbread houses, he found someone to let us in to the display. Our guide then informed us that the university's new head football coach was to be announced that afternoon, and they were holding the press conference in the theater since it was too cold and wet to hold it at the football stadium. Well, that explained the lack of parking!

The houses were beautiful, but we still can't figure out who would arrive four hours early to a press conference announcing news that was released (albeit unofficially) the day before.

I never thought I would be happy to get rid of so many books!

The other night, Kyle and I decided that we had too many books that were just gathering dust and taking up space that could be used to more efficiently shelve the books we have and use regularly. So, we began purging... and cleared off three whole shelves worth of books! The scary part is that we got rid of about a dozen boxes of books before we moved! Yikes!

So, this morning the kids and I are loading all the purged books into the truck so that we can sell them to the book store in town this afternoon. Before we moved, I brought 2 boxes of books there to sell. They rejected one box worth and offered me $50 for the other box. I'm hoping this trip is at least as profitable!

Coming home from a vet check-up duet.

New dog has no i.d. chip, so I'll send a pic to the humane society this afternoon. Our dog seems to have turned a corner: he growled at the vet and tried to get away... on four legs! He wasn't too stable (or successful), but he tried. We think having the stray around is motivating him to get moving. Not sure how long that experiment will (or should) last.

Organising the office (with the beneficial side effect of getting the office cleaned as well).

For the last few weeks, I have entered the office daily with the intention of finally getting everything in order in there but left with nothing done because I had absolutely no idea how to do it... how to fit everything into the closet and make it efficient to be able to reach what we need when we need it as well as how to best arrange the office furniture and supplies to make the most logical and efficient use of space for what we need.

This morning, inspiration struck. It's not done yet, but it is looking worlds better! Soon, the room will be de-cluttered enough so that we can paint. Not that the bright purple walls with dark purple dots aren't lovely, but... they just aren't us.

Too bad I remembered too late that I usually halve the recipe since I don't have a pot big enough to hold everything as the recipe is written. Made for a good, if awkward, lesson on how to divide the remaining ingredients into multiple, differently sized pots.

Repeating an oft repeated biology lesson around our place recently... which vertebrae the dog broke and how that effects nerve clusters and why the vet doesn't know exactly which abilities the dog will regain and which he won't.

Probably won't be the last time for this lesson, either. I wonder if I can buy a dog skeleton for the kids to examine?

Washing the dog.

He's back to his old self, sans the ability to walk using his hind legs. We think his continence is back - he just can't walk to go. Hopefully, the vet will be able to give us some tips to get him back on his feet. Today, he pulled himself (rather clumsily) down the porch steps then got himself around to the side of the house. I was rather impressed with his abilities. Now if we could just get him to let us pick him up or roll him off his left side so we could wash him properly.

Playing bad cop. Prima got to be good cop.

We had to clean and exercise the dog this morning and try to get him to stand. He likes the massage and doesn't mind the exercise, but he's not too keen on standing. So, Prima got to be the loving one who spoke kindly to him and expressed sympathy while I gently but firmly made him stand up so I could clean him and move him. He's not to happy with me right now.

Our dog was hit by a car this morning. A friend drove us to the vet then got me some lunch and brought me home to talk to Kyle and the kids about how the dog is doing and get some rest before heading back out to pick up the truck and run other errands later.

The dog is doing pretty well, considering. We'll know more tomorrow after the swelling goes down some. Prayers are appreciated.

Moving furniture.

We had a few issues/ needs that needed to be addressed:

1) Living room/ dining room was too crowded and it was difficult to sit on one side of the dining table (which is also our school table).

2) The office had plenty of bookshelf space but it was only because there there two bookshelves in there where there was really only room for one.

3) We replaced our dressers a couple weeks ago with a nice wardrobe, but my night-stand belonged to the same ugly set as those dressers, and I really, really wanted to replace it without sacrificing its great storage space.

4) We needed a place near the front door (preferably outside) where the mailman could leave packages safely under the cover of the front porch and we could store dirty shoes, umbrellas, etc.

I finally received inspiration on how to meet all of these needs with the furniture we already owned:

1) I moved one of the school shelves to the office (all the non-current school items will be moved to the office closet... once that gets emptied out and re-organised).

2) I moved one of the office bookshelves into our bedroom to serve as my night-stand. Now I have triple the storage and the bedside lamp is at the perfect height for reading!

3) I moved the other office bookshelf next to the front door.

4) I shifted the remaining school shelf, re-organized it, and was then able to take the two bar stools that the kids use to sit at the kitchen counter and move them to the now empty corner and out of the way.

I should have taken before and after pics, but I was so energized to get started once inspiration struck that it never even crossed my mind.

We all love the new arrangement, and I love that it has forced us to purge more unnecessary items!

They are actually looking forward to graphing Gilgamesh to see how it fits into the Hero Journey theory. Then we'll watch Star Wars and The Lion King and discuss those as well. (They are already identifying elements of the journey and types of heroes in everything they watch, read, or hear referenced.)

In town picking up a piece of grown-up furniture to replace two pieces of our early-married/ graduate student furniture.

Please pray for Ben, the owner of the "antiques" shop where we bought the armoire. He had quadruple bypass surgery about a month ago and this morning he had pain and felt a pop at the surgery site as he got out of bed. This is the first problem since the surgery, and he was hesitant to call the doctor although we did our best to convince him that he needed to call. Also, he can no longer help customers and sellers lift furniture, but the help he has hired has been unreliable about showing up to work so Ben has been lifting weights he should not be. Kyle offered to come in and help him, but we doubt Ben will take him up on the offer. Pray that Ben will do what he needs to take care of his health.

Finally...

Desk set up (not organized, but set up - it's only taken 2.5 months!)

Usable-ish computer available (mine died, and I haven't replaced it yet; but between my netbook and Kyle's old Mac - whose screen is starting to go, but at least it has a cool black hole at the bottom and makes fun, psychedelic waves whenever I bump the computer or screen - I should be able to get back into the swing of things)

The beginnings of a daily schedule (we, especially me, are finally starting to get used to the new place and the physical flow necessary to be productive; we still need to move some things around, add others, and paint some, but it definitely feels more like home now)

Let's see if consistency will follow! (cross your fingers)
